Thanos Nenes Selected to Receive AMS Award

Atlanta (October 9, 2008) — Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Associate Professor Athanasios Nenes has been honored with the American Meteorological Society’s (AMS) highest award, the 2009 Henry G. Houghton Award.

The Henry G. Houghton Award is given annually to young promising atmospheric scientists who have shown outstanding ability in their fields.

Henry G. Houghton was a renowned researcher in atmospheric physics, and the award commemorates his accomplishments in the field of atmospheric physics.

The American Meteorological Society, founded in 1919, is the main professional society promoting the development of atmospheric and oceanic sciences.

Dr. Nenes holds a joint appointment in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Current projects in his research group include:
• Modeling of aerosol-cloud-climate interactions on a global scale.
• Modeling and parameterization of cloud microphysical processes.
• Thermodynamic modeling of tropospheric aerosols.
• Instrumentation and techniques for characterizing organic-water interactions, hygroscopicitiy and CCN activity of aerosols.
• Laboratory and field studies on CCN activity and aerosol-cloud interactions.
• New particle formation and its impact on CCN concentrations.
• Effect of pollution on marine ecosystem productivity and carbon cycle.
• Impact of marine ecosystem productivity on clouds.
